Tenen & Tufts – On a November Saturday in 1974, cavers Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts found themselves at the edge of a sinkhole near the Whetstone Mountains of southern Arizona. They discovered a narrow crack in the bottom of the sinkhole, following the source of warm, moist air toward what ended up being more than 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of pristine cave passages. Today this is known as Kartchner Caverns.
